Music recommendation of the day! This is "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)" from ex-FallOutBoy vocalist Patrick Stump. Enjoy.

'Cause they might try to tell you how you can live your life
But don't, don't forget it's your right
To do whatever you like

the king's speech

The Oscars may have ultimately not turned out as I hoped, but I was pretty close in getting all my predictions right.. except for the two main categories of course... and original screenplay.. well enough. Congratulations to Tom Hooper on his win, there will be another time for Aronofsky and Fincher to take home the awards. Here are my thoughts on the now Best Picture Academy Award Winner "The King's Speech".

PS. I love you Natalie Portman. I cried with your speech. Obviously.

A beautifully filmed and impeccably written, directed and edited dramedy that is worth praising left alone for its inspiring plot and the acting duel between Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, both who make the characters their own so intensely you realize they were actually born to play those roles.

of guilty pleasures... burlesque & love and other drugs

Burlesque is the not the kind of musical you admire and consider award-worthy, Burlesque is the kind of musical that you look for on a rainy night, to have some fun, sing/dance along and just sit back and enjoy. Another name for it? A guilty pleasure. The plot may be troubled, quite campy and mundane, but the songs are good enough to assure a great time. Besides, the cast is likeable, and let’s face it, we just can’t ever get enough Cher.

67 OUT OF 100

Love and Other Drugs differences itself from other romantic comedies simply for the fact that its story is not overdone, that it’s actually funny at several moments, that it has two incredible lead actors that always deliver more than expected and of course, the final touch, that it’s quite charming and moving. However, the movie is not clean of flaws, sometimes the pacing catches the audience by surprise and they no longer know whether to laugh or cry, not to mention the music can sometimes be a mood killer. Overall, Love and Other Drugs will easily classify into some people’s lists as an instant guilty pleasure, and even if it doesn’t, it's still worth watching at least once, specially for the great on screen chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway.

never let me go

I had my hopes pretty high for this one. It looked like a different movie, potentially sad and artistic. After finally seeing it I guess I can admit it was indeed sad and artistic, but it definitely didn’t fill my expectations. Never Let Me Go is quite the difficult movie to enjoy. The premise may be interesting, but the pacing never changes, the whole movie is in the same line, it’s slow and very calmed and do to that, it can become dull at several moments. The upsides are the performances from the cast and the artistic look to it, with great cinematography and music that stand on their own. However, overall, this is not the sci-fi drama most people would care to see and at the end it just falls flat as a forgettable and gloomy film that could have been more.

the end

you don't stand a chance fighting with me

because even if I lose
you lose with me

this isn't working
I could see it before but now it's clearer
we are long past expiration date
my patience is gone
and so am I

the fighter

I’m normally not the least attracted or entertained by movies involving boxing or any kind of fighting, but this was the exception to the rule. The Fighter is an amazingly written dramedy, it’s entertaining from beginning to end, following a story that will keep your attention on the screen all the time, simply for the fact that it is not about boxing, it’s about the characters, their lives. That’s what really made this film excellent to me, that it had a heart and it was different, unconventional. Not to mention the brilliant performances from the cast, specially Christian Bale, who just simply blew my mind away with what most be (so far) the best of his career.

let me in

A different vampire-themed film, more serious, realistic and intense. This horror drama presents a more original approach into the classic blood-sucking character, making it more raw and at the same time, more human. The direction, music and art are impeccable, featuring some really amazing shots and sequences that help the environment created by the film and that we definitely don’t see every day. Also, thanks to impressive performances from its two young leads and a great original score, "Let Me In" doesn’t allow you to look away at any time, capturing your whole attention, immersing you into the events happening before your eyes, understanding the characters, feeling very close to them, perhaps way too close, as at the end, the movie leaves you with a haunting feeling of paranoia and uncertainty, a mix of emotions and a finale truly hard to forget.

eye tracking

Check this out, it's really cool :)

An eye tracking program is used to follow what people look at when watching a movie, there's some pretty interesting results.

The movie used for the experiment was Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, an amazing film, I might add.

top 9: let's get dirty

lui mogenno presents...

TOP 9
"Let's Get Dirty"

So I was listening to this song... and I started to wonder... man is this guy horny! And well yeah, everyone gets horny sometimes in their lives, it's normal... so why musicians wouldn't? But still... does that mean they should write songs about it?

You be the judge. Here are 9 songs from the past couple of years that get right to the point expressing exactly (sometimes maybe way too explicitly) what they would like to DO.. and how they would like to DO it...

[9] Love In This Club - Usher
Hasn't it ever happened to you that you are on the dance floor and you see someone who you just gotta have RIGHT THERE, RIGHT NOW? You wanna take it to my place? A motel? I say NO dammit! I wanna have you right here in front of all these people! That's what Usher insists on doing.. at least he's even cute and sweet about it "I wanna make looooveee in this cluuuub" I'm thinking the rest of the people in that club would REALLY wish he didn't.

[8] Procedimientos Para Llegar a un Común Acuerdo - Panda
Mexican rock band Panda make their wishes very clear. The song's chorus translates to something like this: "if you want me, I promise you, I shall not talk of love". It's like the symphony of one night stands. "I have to warn you, I may not be here when morning comes.. you may think I only want you for one time, but actually, twice would be fine". Sing this to the next person you desire and if you don't get a slap in the face you might end up getting exactly what you want!

[7] For Your Entertainment - Adam Lambert
If I ever was to get involved with Adam, I have to admit I'd be a little scared of what he'd do to me... He'd probably "hurt me real good". One thing is certain, no one knows what they're getting into with him, and they'll anyway end up screaming his name... because "once he's in, he owns your heart". I'm not even sure I want to know exactly what he means with that. Jesus.

[6] In My Head - Jason Derulo
I used to be so inoccent singing this song out loud and thinking it was super romantic and cute... until someone came up to me and told me "have you even listened to the lyrics of that song?" When I did... wow. So pretty much what this guy is trying to do is get into some girl's pants by offering himself to be her "teacher" and confessing to her all his dirty wishes of seeing her "all over him, fullfilling his fantasies and screaming his name". Oh yeah, it's going down...

[5] If U Seek Amy - Britney Spears
How this ever got to be a single, and not get censored, I will never understand. I mean, we are not stupid, we can perfectly understand what Britney is trying to say here.. People come on, the lyrics make no sense, dig deeper! Before it's too late and you catch your young daughter singing "all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if(F) you(U) seek (CK) Amy (ME)"

[4] Peacock - Katy Perry
This shouldn't even get an explanation. Katy Perry is desperate to see some dude's magical, colorful, jaw dropping, eye popping, body shocking "peacock cock cock". Can it get more explicit than that? The worst part is when she actually gets to see it and describes her experience as "OMG no exaggeration, boy all this time was worth the waiting, I just shed a tear".

[3] Tonight - Enrique Iglesias ft. Ludacris
Who's to say Enrique Iglesias can't get down and dirty? The latin artist leaves behind his romantic pop ballads to cut more to the chase. He apparently got tired of telling girls he'll be their hero and give them his heart, this time around he's so confident of himself he just goes near to them and informs them how it's going down: "Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude, but tonight I'm f*cking you". Well yeah Enrique, you are indeed being pretty rude.

[2] Rude Boy - Rihanna
It's hard to pick just one song from Rihanna's repertory to fill a spot in here. "Rockstar 101", "Hard", "S&M" anyone? It's clear the sweet good girl has indeed GONE BAD. But nothing like "Rude Boy". Rihanna wonders if this guy can "get it up" and of course, if it's "big enough". I mean, you don't want to leave her unsatisfied of something like that do you? Tonight is gonna be fire and that poor guy is gonna take it like "boom boom boom". I'm afraid after this and "S&M" we know WAY too much about Rihanna's sex life.

[1] I Wanna F*ck You - Akon ft. Snoop Dogg
Does it get more explicit than this? Of course there was a super censored version of Akon's song, but everyone eventually came across the original one, and most of us wish we didn't. Because I mean, okay fine, you wanna f*uck her, you go ahead, but do you REALLY also have to mention your d*ck and her p*ssy to do so? We get the point you creepy pervert, ENOUGH. And what's Akon's explanation to all of this? Well... "P*ssy is p*ssy, and baby you are p*ssy for life". That doesn't even make any sense. No way he's getting any with THAT.

in sickness and in health

So I'm at home, pretty sick, can't really talk... or move for that matter, so I started on a movie marathon that included Finding Nemo and my two favorite musicals Sweeney Todd and Across the Universe.

Am I a total masochist for watching musicals when I can't even sing because it HURTS?

Answer is yes, I am.

In the fashion of masochism, I leave you with Rihanna's new video "S&M" from her latest electro/R&B album "Loud".  I'm gonna be honest, the song is pretty cool for getting dirty on the dance floor, but this video freaks the hell out of me... Rihanna likes it ROUGH, and she's not afraid to show it, even if we didn't ask >.<'

Anyone up for a banana split? :)

cosmic love

Today's song reccomendation is Florence + The Machine's "Cosmic Love" from their album Lungs. Enjoy! Watch the video too, it's pretty bizarre and visually pleasing :)

"The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out. You left me in the dark. No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight. In the shadow of your heart."

my take on music 2010

The Music of 2010
by lui mogenno

In my opinion, even do 2010 wasn't as good as other years in music, it was still pretty solid, featuring excellent comebacks from rock groups such as My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and AFI, new proposals like Florence + The Machine, new young performers like B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Ke$ha, and the continuous rise of a more electronic/dance pop with Rihanna, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas and Lady GaGa. Not to mention massive hits like Eminem/Rihanna's Love the Way you Lie and Paramore's The Only Exception.

2010 had its ups and downs, but it was overall a great year for music fans of all genres. We all got some more of what we wanted, and it just left us biting our nails for what will happen in 2011... which is now.

But before we focus on this new year full of hopes and wishes, here are my choices for the best in music of the past year, 2010... Enjoy.

Performance of the Year
*drum roll*

Nuestra Aflicción / Panda (from Poetics)
To be honest, I have a weak spot for rock, not too heavy, but rock and this year, I was proud to see a rock/punk band from my country get enormous ammounts of attention with the release of their Unplugged Cd/DVD and their last single from double album Poetics. Of course I'm talking about Panda. If you haven't heard of them, you definitely should, 2010 was their year here in Mexico and it wouldn't surprise if they soon take over a bigger part of the world. "Nuestra Aflicción" is a sad song, strong, with powerful beautiful lyrics and a perfectly fitting video, and my ultimately favorite and most played song of the year.

Runner-Ups
The Catalyst / Linkin Park (from A Thousand Suns)
& Dog Days Are Over / Florence + The Machine (from Lungs)

Album of the Year

A Thousand Suns / Linkin Park
I was beyond amazed when I heard the new album from Linkin Park, it is a pretty amazing concept album, and one of the best I've heard in a very long time. It feels like the soundtrack to an apocalyptic movie, featuring new sounds that mix rock, rap, electro and lots more which I probably don't even know the name of. A Thousand Suns is a huge change from LP, and a very good one I might add.

Runner-Ups
CrashLove / AFI
Teenage Dream / Katy Perry

Video of the Year

Dog Days Are Over / Florence + The Machine
No words can explain it. Hands down, best video of the year. Florence + The Machine really were the huge surprise this 2010, bringing a new sound, the mind blowing voice of Florence mixed with those drums, it's just something out of this world, just like its video, so weird, so artistic... It's hard not to love it instantly.

Runner-Ups
The Catalyst & Waiting for the End / Linkin Park
Love The Way You Lie / Eminem ft. Rihanna

Song (Lyrics) of the Year

The Only Exception / Paramore
"And that was the day that I promised I'd never sing of love if it does not exist... but darling, you are the only exception" Simple, yet so beautiful, lyrics, you can tell this song was written with pure heart. A modern love song that I bet will not be forgotten, Paramore shows its soft side and I just simply adore it.

Whataya Want From Me / Adam Lambert
Nuestra Aflicción / Panda

black swan

Written by Mark Heyman, Andrés Heinz & John McLaughlin
Directed by Darren Aronofsky
Starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey & Winona Ryder

"REVIEW"
Who ever thought a movie featuring ballet could be so intense, dramatic and scary? A disturbing, mind blowing, bizarre psychological horror/thriller brilliantly executed by ground-breaking director Darren Aronofsky. Black Swan will mess with your head and keep your attention fully on the screen with a script so amazing that just keeps on getting weirder and greater as the minutes go by, just to close up with the most exhilarating last 30 minutes you can imagine. A beautiful score, impeccable choreography, fantastic art direction and a breath-taking performance from Natalie Portman join to deliver an ultimate, out of this world, experience that you can’t miss.

death of a dream

ah you'll never change
I should have known better

that's how the inoccent pidgeon crashes
he trusts too much that he won't get hurt

he is given wings

and now it's time you know
I'm never coming back
